International
In 2003 Beauchamp College was first awarded the prestigious International School Award by the British Council in recognition of its success in introducing a Global Dimension to teaching and learning at the College. We have developed our international programme considerably since the first award and have been reaccredited twice, the latest being in the summer of 2009.
The international programme includes a diverse range of activities which regularly take place including collaborative curriculum work with partner schools worldwide, yearly language exchanges to Germany and various departmental study visits overseas. Beauchamp has worked closely with Wilhelm Raabe Schule in Lüneburg, Germany for a number of years and the exchange now incorporates a joint curriculum project. Last year History and R.E. were involved in this project. These Partnerships with Padma Seshadri Bala Bhavan Senior Secondary School in Chennai, India and Stanger Secondary School in South Africa may be more recent but have grown in strength. Since we first developed our links we have taken two groups of sixth form students to visit India and our partner school, we are planning to return to India June/July 2011.
In 2009 the International Students Leaders conference took place at Stanger and in October 2010 the 6th form students took part in the South Africa literacy project to help Lower Tugela Primary school learners develop their literacy skills though football. Many students speak English as their second language and therefore have below average literacy skills. Football is very popular in South Africa and the learners were very keen to improve their football skills and undertake literacy development activities. The project involved over 60 learners from Lower Tugela Primary aged 10 – 13 taking part in literacy development sessions on an individual and group basis. Football themed books were written by A-Level English students from Beauchamp College and the South African learners really enjoyed reading them and developing their literacy skills during the week long program. The football coaching included skill development, games and the week ended with a tournament, which was thoroughly enjoyed by all.
