Music
There is always a lot going on in the music department at Beauchamp. During lesson time there is a great deal of practical music making of all styles and many recording sessions. Students are actively involved in mentoring others and we are always trying fresh approaches to musical learning.
Extra-curricula music is a strong feature of the life of the department and recent projects have included a rock band project with our feeder high schools, jazz combo, choir, Youth Finds a Voice participation, wind band from scratch, Music Tech workshops, DJ and sampling workshops and drop-in sessions, partnership work with DeMontfort University and the Philharmonia Orchestra and much more besides. Recent shows for which the department has worked with Dance and Drama include Guys and Dolls, Blues Brothers and Stepping Out. There are also regular concerts, recitals, live lounge events, music taster evenings and music making around the college, exploring the acoustic qualities of many of the exciting spaces on the campus.
Facilities are good and continue to develop. The department has a fully equipped recording studio (check out the virtual tour!) and a music technology lab with 16 Apple Mac based digital audio workstations with industry standard Logic Pro music production software. We have two sets of Technics DJ decks and an Apple Macbook portable recording rig. There is also a substantial classroom and suite of practice rooms with 20 computer workstations running Sibelius notation software. There is a good-sized hall with grand piano, 3 acoustic pianos and six digital pianos, three drum-kits (including digital drum kit) and a host of amplifying and PA equipment.
The department has excellent and supportive staff. Head of Music is Anthony Anderson, who is also an Advanced Skills Teacher and works supporting music delivery in schools across the county. Robert Abba is a full time teacher of Music Technology and is an experienced recording engineer, teacher and musician. Nilesh Champaneri is a Music Technology teacher who has been a DJ and producer for many years. He is currently involved in a number of creative music making workshops around the region. In addition, the department benefits from a team of visiting peripatetic music tutors and an administrative assistant based in the department.
Beauchamp music offers excellent support, facilities and opportunities and is a great environment in which to study.
