Duke of Edinburgh’s Award

At Beauchamp College, there has been an active Duke of Edinburgh’s Award programme for a number of years across all three levels; Bronze, Silver and Gold. This letter describes the benefits and how to begin or progress the Award at Beauchamp College.

Each level of the Award has four elements that have to be completed typically over three to twelve months depending on the level:

ElementExample
VolunteeringVoluntary work in the local community that could be combined with potential work experience e.g. Teaching, Coaching, Childcare.
PhysicalRegular participation in a sport or fitness activity e.g. Football or Netball Teams/Clubs
SkillsLearn or improve a skill over a period of time e.g. Cooking or Music.
ExpeditionA two to four day walking journey with camping to develop teamwork.
ResidentialGold only. Time away from home meeting new people in a different environment.

Experience tells us that each level of the award provides a young person with new insights into their capabilities and by trying new things it helps confidence to grow plus develop useful skills. The official Duke of Edinburgh’s Award website offers a lot more information (www.dofe.org) and if you want to get involved or wish to learn more about continuing the programme email: dofe@beauchamp.org.uk.
