Congratulations to Divyata Purohit and Jia Kanabar, year 8, for being shortlisted for the East Midlands Royal Society of Biology (RSB) Poster Competition.

Mr M. Vastenavondt from Uppingham School and Professor Wilson, vice chair of the RSB, were host for the zoom meeting.  Jia and Divyata answered the questions of the judges superbly, explaining why global warming and marine pollution are serious issues now and for the future, how they were inspired by Greta and what people could do giving clear examples, e.g. less deforestation and more recycling.

In total there were 6 judges:

Mrs Rosemary Hall, Secretary East Midlands Branch of the Royal Society of Biology

Mr Vastenavondt

Dr. Geoff Buck

Dr. Cas Kramer

Dr. Marie Nugent

Dr. Benita Percival

Professor Philippe Wilson joined later to announce the winner and runner up. He mentioned how difficult it was for the judges to make a decision, because they thought everyone’s work was outstanding.  This meant that all who were shortlisted received a ‘highly commended’ certificate.  There were so many comments from the judges about how well Divyata and Jia did, especially considering their age.  They were the youngest shortlisted.  They mentioned how well they coped with presenting on zoom  and, in an ideal world, really would have liked to meet them face to face.
