Krishan Bhikha
Inspired by geography and physics at Beauchamp College, Krishan pursued civil engineering — today he works on high-speed rail designs at HS2Krishan’s passion for civil engineering started back at Beauchamp College, where he discovered a love for geography and physics. Those subjects didn’t just spark his curiosity—they gave him a solid foundation and a way of looking at the world that shaped his future. A defining moment came when his physics teacher arranged for a civil engineer from EON to visit the college and share insights into their career. Inspired by how these disciplines connect to real-life challenges, Krishan set his sights on a career where he could make a real difference to infrastructure and the communities around him.
After leaving Beauchamp, Krishan continued his education at Nottingham Trent University, earning a BEng in Civil Engineering. He then advanced to a master’s degree (MSc) in Civil Engineering at the University of Nottingham, further deepening his technical expertise.
His career began during his degree that included a year-long industrial placement with Volker Fitzpatrick. As a site engineer, Krishan worked on infrastructure projects at the Olympic Park in London ahead of the 2012 Games. The company sponsored his final year of study and offered him a job upon graduation. He returned to Volker Fitzpatrick after completing his master’s, contributing to the Birmingham Airport runway extension—another live construction project where he saw engineering designs come to life.
Krishan later transitioned into design-focused roles, working with Atkins, Amey, and SLC Rail. He progressed to Senior Project Engineer, contributing to various rail projects. His expertise led him to HS2, where he worked on the development and hybrid bill designs for Phase 2b of the high-speed rail network. Today, Krishan remains with HS2, helping to shape the Liverpool to Manchester railway line, formerly known as Northern Powerhouse Rail.
As a Senior Route Engineer at HS2, Krishan is part of a multidisciplinary team of engineers and environmental specialists. His role involves managing design teams, reviewing technical work, and ensuring designs meet safety and quality standards. He also engages with stakeholders—including homeowners, businesses, councils, and MPs—to explain project plans and address concerns.
Among his proudest achievements is earning professional qualification with the Institution of Civil Engineers, a milestone that reflects his dedication and expertise in the field.
Krishan’s story is a powerful example of how passion, education, and hands-on experience can lead to a fulfilling career in civil engineering—one that helps shape the infrastructure of tomorrow.
