Emma York
Inspired by Biology and Geography at Beauchamp College, Emma is now helping students access higher education while building a career focused on sustainability.Emma’s passion for sustainability began during her time at Beauchamp College, where Biology and Geography were her favourite subjects. “My biology teachers really inspired me to pursue the subject further,” Emma recalls. “They were passionate and introduced me to sustainability, which is now my main focus.”
After leaving Beauchamp, Emma studied Biology BSc at the University of York, completing a placement year in sustainability. During this time, she worked at CPI, a technology and innovation company, focusing on cultivated meat and sustainability projects.
Emma is currently a Graduate Coordinator at the University of York, working in the Access and Outreach team. Her role involves designing presentations and resources for events aimed at widening participation in higher education for underrepresented groups, as well as attending careers fairs and delivering outreach programmes.
Looking ahead, Emma hopes to move into sustainability outreach and science communication. Among her proudest achievements are winning Best Poster during her placement year, attending conferences independently, and creating a podcast on public perceptions of cultivated meat for her dissertation.
Emma’s journey shows how early inspiration at school can lead to exciting opportunities and a clear sense of purpose.
