Celebrating Lunar New Year with a day of culture and creativity
We were delighted to welcome the Confucius Institute at De Montfort University to Beauchamp College on 29th January, for a vibrant Lunar New Year celebration. The event – aptly titled ‘Welcoming Spring in the Year of the Horse’ - brought a rich programme of cultural activities to our school and gave students a unique chance to learn about Chinese traditions in an engaging and hands‑on way.
The day began with a Sichuan Opera face‑changing performance, which immediately captivated students with its precision, colour and skill. This was followed by an introduction to the cultural meaning behind the Year of the Horse, including stories about Spring Festival customs and zodiac legends that have been passed down for generations.
More than 60 students from different year groups took part in the celebration, with many commenting on how much they enjoyed learning through practical activities. The Hanfu costume experience allowed pupils to try on traditional Chinese clothing while learning about its history, and the Chinese calligraphy workshop gave them the opportunity to practise brushwork and create their own pieces of writing. These sessions brought the culture to life and created a lively, enthusiastic atmosphere throughout the day.
The event provided a meaningful opportunity for students to explore Chinese New Year in depth and strengthened the partnership between the Confucius Institute and Beauchamp College. We are extremely grateful to the DMU team for sharing their expertise, enthusiasm and festive spirit with our school community.
